Lace competitions in Italy in 2019...
It has come to my attention that there are two very interesting exhibitions about lace in Italy this year which are calling for entries but they only have information pages in Italian. After consulting with the organizers I am putting the details here below to try to encourage as many members of the TextileSupport community as possible to participate.
The first is a call out from the Cantù Biennale of Bobbin Lace, and there is not a lot of time left so anyone who is interested or needs some help navigating the Italian don't hesitate to get in touch!
Microcosm 2019: Seeking Modernity in the world of lace
Lace makers are asked to express their own concept of modernity in lace.
This is for bobbin lace only.
The laces can either be made by individual lace makers or by collectives such as schools or associations.
Measurements: Between 5 and 10 cm . The lace is intended to be of small dimensions but precious (in its use of stitches, the fineness of the threads and the originality of the design).
The lace can take on various forms, fitting within the prescribed dimensions between 5 and 10 cm. (e.g. rectangular, round, square etc.)
The threads used may be either traditional in terms of fineness and colour: white, ecru, coloured threads; threads in cotton, linen, silk or any other fibre suitable for lace making including metallic and innovative threads.
Together with your lace you must include: a title, brief description of the creative concept behind the work as well as the design/drawing and pricking.
The laces must not be framed nor 3D
The laces must arrive by June 15 2019. The most significant works will be displayed at the 14th Inetnational Biennale of Lace in Cantù (13-27 October 2019) Entries should be sent to:
Comitato per la Promozione del Merletto
Via Matteotti, 39/A - 22063 Cantù (CO) – Italy
(Please mark them as "samples with no commercial value" for the customs declaration)
You can find out more about the Biennale here.
The second is being organised by the Civic Museums of Venice to promote and preserve the art of lace making:
A Lace for Venice: 6th Competition for needle and bobbin lace
This year’s theme is “The Sky” in the literal, philosophical or spiritual sense. In terms of nature, the “big bang”, poetry, music, folklore or science “The Sky “ is a vast and beautiful theme for this year’s competition.
There are four categories for this competition: Traditional needle lace, Contemporary needle lace, Traditional bobbin lace & contemporary bobbin lace.
It is only possible to enter one piece per person in each category. The works entered must not have been previously exhibited.
You can download the entry forms for the competition here, and they need to be emailed to this address email@example.com by 4pm 30 September 2019.
Selected works must then be delivered to the museum by 4pm 29 November 2019.
The exhibition and press conference will take place in February 2020 and the 3-5 best works will become part of the collection of the prestigious Lace Museum on the Island of Burano.
If anyone needs help filling in the forms or further information in English just get in touch!
It would be so wonderful to see some work from our community and I look forward to seeing the selected pieces and the catalogues.
